Compassionate End-of-Life Care
One of our specialties at Rogers Veterinary Service is the ability to offer compassionate at-home euthanasia services for dogs and cats. We also offer on-farm euthanasia services for horses and livestock. Euthanasia services are available 24/7, subject to scheduling availability, for our existing clients. For non-clients, please contact us to determine availability.
Not sure if it's time? Quality of life assessments can help you and your family evaluate your pet's comfort.
What to Expect During This Appointment
A veterinarian will briefly examine your pet or farm animal, and answer any questions or concerns you may have, as well as discuss any additional arrangements that are needed. The vet will typically take care of any paperwork or billing at this time.
The euthanasia can be performed inside or outside, wherever it will be safe and the most comfortable for all involved. There is plenty of time and opportunity for you to be close to your pet for comfort and reassurance, if you desire to be. If this is too difficult, the vet and their assistant will comfort and reassure the patient.
The vet will administer a sedative injection that allows your pet to relax and minimize pain. This typically takes about 5 minutes to be fully effective, at which point the patient is lying down and moving very little. They will slowly drift off to sleep. A sedative is also administered to farm animals, though horses typically remain standing during this time.
The vet will then inject the euthanasia medication into a vein. This does not cause the patient any pain. It is an overdose of anesthesia that slows the heart until it stops. The patient may move a little or have some reflexive movements, but is typically relaxed during this time. After a few minutes, the vet will check the patient’s heart and breathing to assure that they have peacefully passed.
At this time, you are welcome to spend as much time as you need with your pet.
Pet After-Care Options
Bio-Cremation (Aquamation)
Rogers Veterinary Service commonly uses Peaceful Heart Aquamation for our cremation services. You can select between “private cremation,” where your pet is cremated individually at the facility and the ashes are returned to you, or “communal cremation,” where your pet is cremated at the facility with other pets and the remains scattered together.
For private cremation, the standard cremation urn is wooden, but if you would like something different, or personal engraving, please see Peaceful Heart Aquamation(opens in new tab) or call 541-929-8145 for more information. Pawprints are also available for an additional fee.
Burial
At-home burial is allowed in many jurisdictions, based on property owner guidelines and restrictions. For questions, contact the city or county where your property is located.
Equine After Care
In many cases, at-home/on-farm burial is legal and a great option, subject to local guidelines and restrictions. But for those seeking a place to bury their horse, Omega Farms near Noti is a popular option.
Burial & Transport Services
Tail End Transport works directly with Omega Farms and can handle all of the logistics for your horse's burial. Tail End will contact Omega Farms to schedule, pick up your horse after euthanasia, and transport to Omega Farms for burial.
Tail End Transport also offers a mass burial option and coordinates this service with Short Mountain Landfill, south of Eugene. Transportation arrangements to West Coast Pet Cremation in Portland, Petland Cemetery and Cremations in Aberdeen, WA, and Kali's Cremation in Klamath Falls, are also available. Tail End can pick up horses from boarding facilities and transfer them to the owner's property for burial.
